“Put it in your phone, let’s do some business…” – overheard at Beauty Shop brunch

Dreaming of yesterday’s brunch? Yeah, me too. I live in the South and people here like to brunch. Breakfast? Not so much. Brunch? Yes. I think maybe it’s because brunch is an acceptable time to eat more than one would at just an ordinary “breakfast”, and we like our food down here in Memphis.

Booze with breakfast also doesn’t sound as good as a mimosa/bloody brunch. Thus, I often find myself somewhere around noon-thirty on a Saturday or Sunday, or let’s be real here, both days, at one of our favorite brunch spots. It’s Memphis, the food is always good; but there are a few favorites in town that give off the best of my favorite Memphisy atmosphere, and that makes brunching even sweeter. These places make you want to pay a little extra for the biscuits, mimosas, benedict, pancakes, sandwiches, fries, and whatever else of a smorgasbord we usually order… don’t judge me, it’s breakfast AND lunch. One of these places is Beauty Shop restaurant.

It was one of the first places I came upon moving to Memphis, and it still holds many good memories, no matter how many times I go. You need reservations to eat there, as it’s not very big, and usually crowded. Rumor has it Priscilla Presley used to have her hair done (did) here, and it still looks like a 1950’s beauty parlor to this day. Just a few more tables, a gorgeous bar, and pretty copper leaf on the walls, all nestled in Memphis’s Cooper Young District. Come for the grapefruit mimosa’s, stay for the beignets and funny conversation you can overhear from your neighbor tucked into the crowded table next to you.
